The Ouch of It All: When Cooler Temps Meet Stroke Recovery

Stroke Talks

Stroke Awareness & Journey Newsletter

Hey FABulous Reader,

Let’s talk about the ouch of it all.

I’m talking about that deep, achy, can’t-quite-put-your-finger-on-it ouch that hits when the temperatures drop. 🥶

After living in warm weather since my stroke in 2021, I’ve officially been reintroduced to cooler temps here in Washington, D.C. — and y’all, it’s been brutal these last few days, but it's not even that cold yet. My body is staging a full protest. The stiffness, the tingling, the heaviness all of it came rushing back like an uninvited guest.

If you’ve ever noticed your limbs feeling like they belong to someone else when it gets cold, or your energy levels suddenly drop, you are not alone. The change in temperature can mess with circulation, increase muscle spasticity, and even make our joints feel like rusty hinges. It’s not just discomfort it’s that deep “ouch” that lingers in places only stroke survivors understand.

That’s why in this week’s Stroke Talks segment on MilSpouse Conversations’ THEE TEA, I’m diving into how cooler weather affects stroke warriors — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Because this season, we’re not just layering our clothes, we’re layering our self-care, too.

Here’s what I’ll be sharing:

  • Why cooler temps bring on that stiffness and pain.
  • Small things I’m doing to fight the “brrrrr-body blues.”
  • How mindset (and maybe a heated blanket or two) can make all the difference.

🎥 Tune in to THEE TEA LIVE on Wednesday at Noon ET and catch my Stroke Talks segment.

Until then, wrap up, warm up, and remember — you’re not imagining the ouch. You’re just navigating it like the warrior you are. Want to share your Stroke Story? Be a guest on Stroke Talks and let's help bring more awareness the world.
